When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist for the First Time?

Posted .

Taking your child to the dentist is a great way to keep tabs on the health and development of their mouth and answer any questions you might have about their oral health.

The first baby tooth generally erupts from the gums around four to six months old. The American Dental Association recommends that you schedule your child’s first dental checkup at some point between when the first teeth emerge and their first birthday.

Thoughtful scheduling can help reduce the chances that your child will fuss. A morning appointment or one scheduled shortly after their usual afternoon nap often helps because small children are more likely to fuss when they are tired or hungry.

While you are waiting or during the appointment, you should try to keep your own attitude positive and upbeat, as your child will tune into your emotions. This also helps set the tone for future trips to the dentist.

If your child is ready for their first trip to the dentist, please call our office at 801-766-4900 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to meeting your child and helping them get a good start on a health mouth!
